To make this change we believe plan sponsors need to approach the issue just like they have in other areas of their organizations. When employers need to make changes and to improve results in sales, operational and administrative areas, they usually embark on a training and change management initiative. They do it when new software or equipment is put into use, they do it when process changes need to be implemented, they do it when management skills need to be improved, they do it when HR policies and procedures change. They even do it to minimize the risk of sexual harassment problems.

It is time to train employees and their spouses to improve health care purchasing decisions. In no other business area do we give individuals responsibility for spending thousands of dollars without adequate training. No one else is in the hospital, doctor’s office or pharmacy with the plan member when services are being purchased. Hence, we need to engage them and equip them to make better decisions on their own.
